Lake County Arrest History
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the county’s only local general police agency. It patrols Baldwin, Luther, and the rural areas because neither incorporated village has its own police department. Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR conservation officers, and federal officers can also make arrests in Lake County. The right report custodian therefore depends on the badge that created the event, not merely the place where it happened.
A Lake County arrest can produce four related files. The officer creates the Lake County incident or arrest report. The Lake County Detention Center creates Lake County booking and custody records. The 79th District Court opens a Lake County case when charges are filed, with a bound-over felony later moving to the 51st Circuit Court. Reportable Lake County fingerprints and later dispositions flow to the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center. Each Lake County source answers a different question, and none alone is a complete arrest history.
Lake County Arrest FOIA Fields
The county’s online FOIA Requests form is the main written route when an arrest report or booking record is not posted. Its record choices include Public Record, Criminal History Record, Traffic Crash Report, and Incident Report. Pick the narrow choice that fits. A broad request for every record can add search and review time, while a precise request helps staff locate the arrest cycle.
The Lake County form asks for the record date, location or department, report number, incident date and place, a description, and referred names. Conditional Lake County identity fields include first and last name, date of birth, and sex. It also offers physical mail or email delivery. For a full Lake County event, ask separately for the incident or arrest report, booking record, custody log, and CAD or 911 material. Those are distinct Lake County records, and one request label does not ensure all four.

Looking Up Lake County Arrests
Lake County does not publish an official public jail roster or Lake County booking log. The Lake County corrections page describes the facility but is not live custody data. Start with the Lake County phone and records-request chain, then compare the Lake County court and state layers. Accurate names, event dates, and report or case numbers reduce false matches.
- Call the Lake County Detention Center at 231-745-6201 for current public custody information. Ask what can be confirmed by phone and how to request the booking record.
- Call the sheriff at 231-745-2712, or Central Dispatch at 231-745-2711, to ask for the current report-request method and an incident number when publicly confirmable.
- Submit the county FOIA form for the incident report, booking file, custody log, CAD entry, or 911 audio. Give the agency, event date, location, name, and report number when known.
- Search the MiCOURT Case Search, then call the shared Trial Court counter at 231-745-4614 if Lake County coverage, an older file, or a felony handoff is unclear.
- Use MSP’s ICHAT information for the paid statewide public repository slice. Use OTIS only when Michigan prison, parole, or covered probation supervision is relevant.
If MSP or a DNR officer made the arrest, request that agency’s report through its own official records channel. Lake County may still hold the jail booking, but it does not become the custodian of another agency’s incident narrative.
Lake County Booking at Baldwin
All Lake County bookings route to the Lake County Detention Center in Baldwin. The main Lake County jail opened in the mid-1960s with 28 beds, and a 2000 remodel raised capacity to 48. Lake County says the facility houses pretrial detainees as well as several sentenced, protective, witness, juvenile non-status, and MDOC categories. That broad Lake County mission explains why a custody inquiry needs both the person’s identity and the kind of status being checked.
Lake County intake can include property inventory, fingerprints, a photograph, charge entry, medical and security screening, housing classification, and bond or initial-appearance processing. Sensitive Lake County medical, classification, and protective details should not be expected in a public release. The initial Lake County booking charge may also change after prosecutor review. A later Lake County court complaint and final count disposition carry more weight than the intake label.
The official MDOC Offender Tracking Information System shows the later corrections layer. The source image below depicts that official search interface rather than a Lake County jail roster.
OTIS can help after MDOC custody or supervision begins, but it omits current county-jail-only custody and is not a complete arrest search.
Inside a Lake County Arrest Record
A requested Lake County arrest file may join fields from a Lake County officer’s report and the Lake County jail booking cycle. Lake County availability varies because active investigative facts, victim details, personal identifiers, security material, and juvenile records can be withheld or redacted. A useful Lake County release can still preserve the core event and routing information.
| Incident or report number | The arresting agency’s key for the event and later records requests. |
|---|---|
| Arrest date, time, and place | When and where the custody event occurred. |
| Agency and officer | The office that created the report and holds the narrative. |
| Legal authority | A warrant reference or warrantless basis when releasable. |
| Alleged offense | The initial accusation and statute, subject to later change. |
| Booking data | Booking number and time, fingerprint transaction, intake charge, and custody entries. |
| Bond and court | Initial bond information and the court linked to the matter. |
| Release or transfer | Dates and authority for release, housing change, or transfer when public. |
A booking photograph can be requested if disclosable, but Lake County does not publish an official mugshot gallery. The absence of a public photo says nothing about whether an arrest occurred.
Lake County Fingerprint Record Flow
For reportable Lake County offenses, an arresting agency fingerprints the arrested person and transmits Lake County biometric and arrest-event data to MSP’s Criminal Justice Information Center. The Lake County prosecutor and courts then report the filed charge and disposition. MSP links those Lake County updates to an arrest cycle through identity and tracking data. A mismatch, late disposition, or missed link can leave the state entry behind the Lake County court file.
Record flow: Arresting agency › Lake County booking › 79th District Court › 51st Circuit Court when bound over › MSP CJIC.
ICHAT is the public name-based view of part of that repository. It costs $10 and covers public reportable Michigan felonies and serious misdemeanors punishable by more than 93 days. It omits warrants, juvenile matters, traffic, local misdemeanors, federal and tribal matters, other-state records, and suppressed records. For an identity-matched review of one’s own Michigan file, MSP describes a $30 fingerprint process that includes public and nonpublic data tied to the prints.
Booking Logs and Recent Arrests
No official Lake County web booking log was found in the Lake County sources. Do not treat the Lake County corrections department description as a list of current inmates. For the newest Lake County custody status, call the jail. For a durable Lake County record of what occurred, submit FOIA. For filed Lake County charges and bond orders, use the district or circuit court. Each Lake County step has a distinct clock, so the newest arrest may not appear in every system at once.
MI-VINE at 1-800-770-7657 can provide custody or release notification where covered. It is an alert channel, not a criminal history report. Likewise, OTIS begins to matter when the person enters MDOC custody or supervision. The official Michigan parole and probation overview explains that supervision layer.
This statewide corrections view should be paired with Lake County jail and court sources when the question concerns a local arrest.
Note: A missing name in a current custody source does not prove that no past Lake County booking or arrest record exists.
Lake County Arresting Agency Matters
Seasonal trail, snowmobile, boating, and resource enforcement can involve Michigan DNR officers as well as the sheriff. Michigan State Police Hart Post No. 62 also serves Lake County. An MSP-created report goes through MSP FOIA, even if the Lake County jail processed the booking. A DNR-created report likewise stays with the state conservation agency’s records channel.
Federal arrests require the federal agency and federal court layer. The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers federal custody from 1982 forward and is not a local arrest file.
The locator can show a federal register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location, while the federal docket supplies the filed case events.
Why Lake County Charges Change
The jail records the charge known at intake. The Lake County Prosecuting Attorney then decides what to file, if anything. One initial label can become an amended charge, several counts, or no filed case. In court, each count can end by plea, verdict, dismissal, or acquittal. “Case closed” does not state which outcome occurred, so the register of actions and count dispositions must be read.
A felony also crosses two Lake County court levels. The 79th District Court handles complaint, arraignment, probable-cause conference, and preliminary examination or waiver. A bindover moves the case to the 51st Circuit Court, where the information, plea or trial, sentence, and postjudgment work appear. The complete Lake County criminal court case record may therefore require both case numbers.
A dismissal does not automatically delete the arrest or booking cycle. If a state record appears wrong, compare the certified court disposition with the MSP entry and use MSP’s correction process. Qualifying public relief may require a set-aside or automatic Clean Slate treatment under Michigan law.
Arrests Are Not Convictions
Lake County arrest and conviction records come from different acts. The first proves that an agency recorded an arrest or booking. The second requires a court judgment of guilt. Keeping that line clear prevents an initial charge from being mistaken for the final result.
| Point | Arrest record | Conviction record |
|---|---|---|
| Created by | Arresting agency and Lake County jail | 79th District or 51st Circuit Court |
| Shows | Event, intake, initial accusation, bond, custody | Filed count, plea or verdict, judgment, sentence |
| Best source | Agency request and county FOIA | Trial Court register and certified file |
| Possible ending | Release, referral, or filing decision | Conviction, dismissal, or acquittal by count |
| State layer | Reportable fingerprint arrest cycle | Disposition reported back to MSP CJIC |
Note: An arrest is not proof of guilt, and the first booking charge may differ from the prosecutor’s filing and final court outcome.
